Application of

NatureColor® Base Coat – Alkyd Oil
NatureOne® – 100% Acrylic

Preparation

OUTDOOR FURNITURE:
Excessive use of water is not recommended for cleaning of outdoor furniture. The best method to prepare the surface for coating is to sand the surface to remove any “mill glaze” and dirt from the surface of the wood. Sand with 80 to 100 grit sandpaper keeping in mind that the goal is to remove dirt and mill glazing. Excessive sanding could further polish the surface, just the opposite effect that you are trying to achieve. Remove any sanding dust by vacuuming.

FENCES:
Refer to the General Preparation guide for applicable cleaning procedure.

Fence Realities

Wood surfaces that relate to fences are prone to high levels of humidity and moisture due to many end grains and horizontal surfaces involved. Wood used in a fence does not have the moisture controlling benefits of a roof overhang, therefore use only 2 coats of NatureColor® Base Coat or NatureOne® thus leaving a more microporous finish on the surface.

Design & Building Techniques

– Use corrosive resistant fastening systems when assembling
– For fences use rough sawn wood
– Use quality wood and let dry to no more than 18% moisture level.

*Note: Low temps or high humidity may extend dry times. 3-4 hours is recommended drying time between coats

Timing

Surfaces should be coated within one week of cleaning procedure, second coat within one week of the first coat.

Note: Depending on climate conditions it is always good to coat your fence prior to the most severe weather conditions. (i.e. In winter climates, it is best to coat in the fall keeping excessive moisture from intruding the surface and then freezing causing more expansion damage in the wood cell structure.)

Color Check

Always do a complete system color test on a sample of surface that will be used in the project from the NatureColor® or NatureOne® purchased for the project.

Batch Check

For color consistency always use the same batch number for the job. If different batch numbers exist, mix all batches together to assure color consistency.

Tools

NatureColor® Base Coat performs best when applied with a long haired natural bristle brush. NatureOne® is best applied with a nylon polyester brush. NatureColor® and NatureOne® products can be sprayed, but must be backed brushed to work the product in the wood and even the pigmentation and film thickness. Spray Specifications:

– Airless Sprayer
– Tip size 5-15 to 5-17
– Pressure – 1000 to 1500 PSI
– Saturate surface with product
– Even application by back brushing

Tip: Keep the spray head no more than 12 inches from substrate.

Clean Up

NatureColor® Base Coat:
Clean up spills and spatters immediately with mineral spirits. Clean the equipment and tools immediately after use with mineral spirits.

NatureOne®:
Wipe up spills and spatters immediately with damp rag. Equipment and tools should be cleaned immediately with soap and water.

Dispose of empty can or unused finish in accordance with state and federal regulations.

For Best Performances

– Keep material from freezing.
– Do not thin or add colorants.
– Apply liberal coats.
– Apply in direction of grain.
– Maintain a wet edge.
– Saturate wood grains.
– NatureColor® Base Coat should be applied when surface and air temperatures are between 50 F and 90 F. NatureOne® should be applied when surface and air temperatures are between 50 F and 80 F.
– Avoid application of product when temperatures are expected to drop below 50 F within 4 hours.
– Avoid applying finish in direct sunlight or when surface is hot to the touch. If weather conditions become too hot during application and product is drying quickly, STOP and wait for cooler conditions.
– Coat all sides of wood where possible.
– Darker color tones will last longer than lighter colors.

Maintenance

FURNITURE:
The longevity of the coating depends on many factors that cause abrasive wear and exposure to ultraviolet light. Add a refresher coat when required.

Excessive use of water is not recommended for furniture when preparing the surface for a maintenance coat. Before recoating the surface it must be clean and free from surface oils and grease. Mix 2 oz. of TSP, one quart of liquid bleach added to three quarts of water. Wipe the surface with this solution. Rinse clean with a damp cloth or sponge to remove remaining cleaning solution and residue from the surface. Let dry. Then, lightly sand the surface with 150 to 220 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by vacuum or moistened rag.

Apply the maintenance coat of the initial product you used; NatureColor® Base Coat (Alkyd oil) or NatureOne® (Water-based formulation).

If bare wood is exposed after sanding, rebuild the coats by feathering in 1st coat and then apply the overall maintenance coat.

Allow appropriate dry times between coats.

FENCES:
Follow cleaning method in the General Maintenance guide:
Use 4 oz. of TSP instead of 2 oz.
